A TrailBehind user I have been corresponding with sent me a cool snippet about the San Jacinto Mountain Hike. Here's what he had to say:
"Are you familiar with the San Jacinto Mountain hike? It is the steepest, highest single hike in North America. Nearly 10,000 feet from the valley near Palm Spring to the peak. The cliffs are incredibly steep. I have ridden the tram up to 8,000 feet and hiked to the peak and also snowshoed toward, but not to, the peak.
John Muir hiked up, without the tram, simply to see the view from the top. By the way, he did most hikes in a suit and tie. He even used his tie to set a dislocated shoulder of another hiker in Alaska once."
